Know The Type of Wires & Cables
The four primary types of wiring in commercial and residential buildings pertain to distinct cable types. They are Non-Metallic (NM) cable, Armored (AC) cable, Metal-Clad (MC) cable and Conduit wiring.
Non-Metallic (NM) Cable: commonly known as Romex, NM cable is the most widely used residential wiring. NM cable contains several wires in a flexible plastic jacket. It is the easiest type of wiring to install and is the least expensive. Because of these two factors, NM cable is generally used for indoor wiring of outlets and lights.
Armored (AC) Cable: BX cable encases insulated conductors in a flexible aluminum or steel armored sheath. Because the metal armor encasing the wires acts as a grounding conductor, AC cable is very durable. AC cable is also code required in many commercial buildings and is used when physically protective wiring is needed.
Metal-Clad (MC) Cable: MC cable, like AC cable, is a type of metal-clad cable. MC cable is constructed of metal tape that is rugged and flexible and completely encloses the wires and a grounding conductor. MC cable is used for commercial and industrial wiring.
Conduit Wiring: Conduit wiring uses a system of protective tubing to contain individually insulated wires. Because of the tubing, conduit wiring is the most protective type of wiring. Because of this, conduit wiring is used for wiring within large commercial buildings.
